Ashbourne and District Pipe Band

Located: Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England

Founded: 1976

Pipe Major: James Dungavel

Description: The Ashbourne & District Pipe Band was formed originally in early 1976 by a small group of enthusiasts, when Ken Hunt and his brother Gordon approached Alistair Brown and asked him to teach them to play the Bagpipes.

Shortly afterwards they were joined by Ian Ratcliffe and David Frith. As a result of a visit to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School by Pipe Major Brown, a number of youngsters became interested in learning to play the drums – and so the Ashbourne & District Pipe Band was born. David Frith plays with the band to this day (and is the current Chairman).

The band’s first public engagement was leading the Brereton Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Parade in 1978 and has performed this duty for them every since.

In August 1979 sufficient funds were raised to buy new uniforms, and the Tartan chosen was Ancient MacKenzie as a tribute to the original President Captain C.J.MacKenzie.

The band has done well in competitions in the past, including British Grade 4 Champions, and retaining the Grade 4 All-England title for two years running (We hope to do that well again soon).

Surrey Pipe Band

Located: Surrey

Founded: 1997

Pipe Major: Roger Huth

Description: The Surrey Pipe Band was formed in 1997 after a group of enthusiastic pipers and drummers, who made up the Surrey Highland Bagpipe Club, realised they had the beginnings of a band. The band soon moved out of their cramped meeting place in Ash to their current band headquarters at the Courtenay Free Church in Woking.

The band was made up of both experienced and learner pipers and drummers and soon had a number of people who wished to play both pipes and drums.

As the band progressed they found themselves playing at some very prestigious events and venues, such as the Albert Hall, Earl’s Court and the NEC Birmingham.

The band over the years has performed for, and with, many celebrities in a wide variety of venues.
The main aim of the band is to entertain and to promote piping and drumming in the South of England. The band encourages new members both young and not so young! and is happy to help with any teaching requirements.
