Value for money

Do you think your services are value for money?

Recent quotes to clients have left me wondering what on earth is happening here. £60 to play at a wedding, £200 to play at a birthday.

This site is trying to promote pipers, to get us jobs to entice people to hire a piper because it will make great atmosphere to any event. Then they see the internal politics at work in the bidding. I'll do it for 10 including fuel, no i'll do it for 9, 8 will cover me, i live next door 11 for me.

No one is interested in detailing what they offer or what to expect for the money, only to throw a price in the clients face and at times dictate a specific time when they are passing by on route to another job whilst quoting an exorbitant price.

This is just astounding and to think it is open source and anyone can read it, the client, other pipers (you know this because some go out there way to undercut perfectly good quotes), other agents, other musicians, bands and even the inland revenue. Forget the last one at your pearl.

We do ourselves no favours acting like this.

If we do end up paying, which I am happy to do, then some pipers will not get work judging by the comments over the past year or so.

Bryce actually emailed me about this and I encouraged him to post it to the forum to open it up to everyone so thanks for posting.

One clear problem with the existing system is how open it is.  A good intention when I first started the site but one that has proved to be unprofessional over time and something I'm trying to move the site away from.  Clients can see all quotes and exactly what you put.  Simply quoting "£200" or "I'll squeeze it in for £200" doesn't look good to anyone reading and is a 'hard sell'.

The way I always think about this is if you phoned up two plumbers and one said "I'll do it for £200 and this is why I've arrived at this cost and what I'll do' and another says 'I should be able to do that for £220' which looks more professional and convincing?

I think this is an excellent point by Bryce:

"This site is trying to promote pipers, to get us jobs to entice people to hire a piper because it will make great atmosphere to any event. "

We need to remember this and collectively make it happen under the new membership system.  This will only serve to get each of you more jobs in the long run through a more professional approach.

When a client phones you and you quote a price the normal question they ask in return is 'What does that include' or 'What do I get for that?'.  The answers to these types of questions have been missing from quotes and this is one reason some people haven't had jobs yet.

I'm still working on the server move.  It's quite a big job as I have a new server setup so as soon as this is done the site will be moving to the new more professional looking membership system.
